Featured Blog review of Immortal Rules

Welcome Sandee of http://sandeelovesbooks.blogspot.com who is doing a guest review for us today of Immortal Rules.

Title: Immortal Rules
Author: Julie Kagawa

What do you get when you mix dystopia and vampires together? You get THE IMMORTAL RULES! The Immortal Rules has got to be one of the best vampire books out there. I mean it was unique yet it still managed to stay true to the original concept of vampires. I don’t hate sparkly vampires because they introduced me to the YA genre but the vamps here in Immortal Rules were bad, fierce and I love it. I seriously adore it. The Immortal Rules was set in a world where vampires ruled over the humans. They use humans to feed themselves. They hire the humans to do slave work for them. They humans were the lowest member of the society. The vampire’s lives in the Inner City while the humans live in a place called the Fringe where they must fight for food, for shelter in order for them to survive .Allie Sekemoto was one of them. She was one of the Unregistered. She despised the vampires. But because of a food hunt that has gone wrong she had to become one of them in order for her to survive. The concept of merging vampires with the current hype of dystopian book was very genius. It was a very smart move. But I have to say that although there might be some writers who might have thought about it already I think it is only Julie Kagawa who could pull something like that off. Julie Kagawa did pull it off with flying colours. She was able to take me again to another world that is very different from our own but as you read the book made you feel that somehow everything felt real. I mean I was like “oh wow how'd she even thought of that?” the whole time I was reading it. The world she created on this book was entirely different from the world she created in her Iron Fey series but equally creative and real. Allie would have to be one of the most kick-ass heroines I’ve ever read. She was smart, strong, brave and occasionally a wise-ass which made her funny at times. I found her hard-headedness a little annoying but she does try to make up for her mistakes when she does one. Like all of Ms. Kagawa’s other characters, Allie was well developed and very real. Kanin who I thought was going to be her love interest was very cold and distant. He was her mentor and he played his part well. The real love interest Zeke blew my mind. I was in love again (sorry Ash). Zeke was just loveable and there was no way you could not fall in love with him. I mean who wouldn’t want a handsome guy who’s full of battle scars. Ooohhh! Gosh Zeke was so sexy! (I am so sorry for my infidelity Ash) Also I loved how Allie and Zeke’s relationship developed. It developed gradually and surely. THANK GOD ITS NOT INSTA-LOVE! I hate heroines who fall head over heels with the male lead just by looking at him. Gawwdd that makes me want to puke. Good thing this one wasn’t one of them. Also it wasn’t the main focus of the book which for me was a very big thing. The purpose of paranormal books is to let the readers have that paranormal experience it’s not all about the romance. I mean if you want romance stick with romance. Paranormal is not supposed to be all about romance. A little romance is okay to keep the readers interested and The Immortal Rules has the right amount of action and romance which I suuuper  LOVED! One other thing I liked was the setting of the book which was New Covington. She was able to incorporate a little of a dystopian feel to this book which is why I think it’s going to be a huge hit. Readers want something new and this was it. The concept was fresh, the plot intriguing, the characters were kick-ass, the villains were despicable, the setting was perfect, what more could you ask for? Also the rabids were a great addition to the already great plot and characters. The rabids were creepy. Gosh I wouldn’t want to meet one of those in my lifetime. OMGosh! Julie Kagawa does it again. I just couldn’t stop praising this book. Honestly, I am so enchanted by this book just as I was with the Iron Fey series.

Dear Julie Kagawa,
Thanks for making The Immortal Rules. Thank you for making this book about vampires and not making them sparkly and love struck. Thank you for making the heroine brave and independent and not like the others who depend too much on their male counterpart. Thank you for adding a dystopian feel to this series because it was genius. Thank you for making these books as if they were real. Please continue to make more books and showing us more of your magic. The Immortal Rules is a series that you wouldn’t want to miss especially if you love vampires. It’s fresh, full of action with a little bit of romance.

Divergent Review

Welcome Jona of http://jonababez.wordpress.com/  who is doing a guest review for us today of one of our BOTM's..... Divergent.
Spoiler Alert

Title: Divergent
Author: Veronica Roth
I gave this book 4.5 stars, the remaining 0.5 for its resemblance to Hunger Games. I just couldn't stop thinking about HG while reading it, but usually, I'm not the kind who compares books. I feel like I'm reading a separate story in a Hunger Games setting. Also, I've read it for one week which doesn't usually happen. I love Hunger games but I don't feel the same way with this book. I didn't feel any emotion while reading it, just plain curiosity to finish it. But I admit, I liked it, especially because of Four. And I hate it when Al died, I thought he might also be one of Beatrice's options. Al is special for me, and it’s hard to know that he committed suicide. I also hated it when her mother and father also died. I have this feeling that the author wanted us to feel the sympathy so we could like the book...well, it's effective. ;) The protagonist is also not likable, with no impact to me. Overall, the book is well written and engrossing. The author has chosen the right factions or values that should be emphasized and she has described them well, especially the symbols that she illustrated. They keep me thinking about the specific initiations, simulations and tests in each faction. And I wish that the author has also explained them, or maybe do it in the next book. But this is a really good book, and I'll be reading the second book for sure.
4.5 stars

Unearthly Review

Welcome Alex of http://possessionofbooks.blogspot.com.au who is doing a guest review for us today of one of our BOTM's..... Unearthly.
Title: Unearthly
Author: Cynthia Hand
Before I start this review I must say, I usually don’t read these types of books so I was pleasantly surprised. With the mass amounts of angel books out there (Hush Hush, Fallen, Halo) what makes this novel so different? Who’s to say this isn’t another cliché love story? Well I was enjoyably surprised after reading this novel that it was nothing like its predecessors. Unearthly begins with a dramatic vision seen by a young female protagonist Clara who is ¼ part-angel blood. The vision tells of her destiny- saving a teenage boy named Christian from a forest fire. Together with her brother and mum they leave the life Clara only known in order to fulfil her ‘purpose’ Cynthia Hands writing is eloquent, weaving romance, angels and supernatural abilities perfectly into an intriguing plot that plays out well throughout the novel. I also loved the emotional connection Clara established with her mum and friends, I thought that revealed more of Clara’s character. Now comes the bit where I was sceptical about. The Love Triangle. I have read so many books with horribly played out love triangles that I think its slowly driving me insane…Is Unearthly the same? No! The two love interests Tucker and Christian are completely and utterly unique from each other and the other author didn’t describe or explain one character better than the other. She left everything to us and our opinions and I think that’s what separates this love triangle from other novels. Clara is subtle and certain with her choice but just when she has firmly decided her choice is blown away which I think adds suspense to the novel. Mainly the characters are what drive this story. Clara is sweet, funny and most importantly the choices she makes are believable. Every choice she made was relevant to what most people would do in the situation. Then there’s Tucker, a cowboy who would do anything for Clara. And Christian a typical high school popular nice guy. Therefore in the book the highlight was definitely character development with just enough unanswered questions that make you want to get the sequel. Also the angel lore was done well and kept me intrigued on the history of how the angels came to be. One of the main things I didn’t like about the novel was its slow pace. Was it just me? But I thought Hand could have paced the story faster without losing important character development. I also thought Hand could have expanded on the relationship between Clara and her brother Jeremy. Just when you think angel books are getting overdone, Cynthia Hand surprises us with her debut novel that finely entwines romance with angel lore. Despite the slow pacing, you should definitely read this novel if you enjoy romance with a supernatural twist and combined with a brilliant plot that makes any Young Adult reader squirm with delight.
